Cantilevered Living

Queen Creek

We transformed a compact Queen Creek lot into a complete family resort through careful planning and bold architectural gestures. Its cantilevered ramada, integrated water feature and layered recreation spaces earned recognition in the 2026 Luxury Pools + Outdoor Living Oasis Awards.

Challenges

Sometimes the biggest challenge is what a site lacks. This semi-custom production home occupied a flat Queen Creek lot—a literal postage stamp surrounded by plain masonry walls. With few natural features and limited architectural cues to build from, the backyard needed to establish its own identity and deliver something dynamic.

The clients are athletes with an active family who love spending time outside and entertaining when they are in town. The yard needed to work equally well for children and adults, with meaningful space for recreation, wellness, dining and gathering. The small covered patio attached to the house could not support that lifestyle, making a substantial outdoor living structure essential.

The property, however, had very clear limits. A large ramada, swimming pool, firepit, play lawn, pickleball court and wellness amenities all had to fit within a compact footprint. No single element could overwhelm the yard, and the finished space still needed to feel balanced, comfortable and easy to navigate.

Solutions

Positioning the ramada at the far side of the property immediately draws people into the yard. Between the house and ramada, the pool fills what might otherwise have been empty space, creating a dynamic foreground without competing with the outdoor structure as the primary destination. A sunken firepit provides an intimate gathering area while preserving clear views across the yard.

The ramada’s cantilevered roof and extended rain-descent water feature create architectural drama while maximizing usable space and maintaining comfortable circulation. Beneath it, a full outdoor kitchen, custom cabinetry, bar seating, dining area and fireplace lounge create a complete outdoor living environment.

Careful planning also preserved room for a turf play area and pickleball court, while an underused side yard became a private wellness zone with a sauna and cold plunge. Even with limited planting, concentrated areas of green soften the hardscape and make the property feel lush and inviting.

Close collaboration with WFord Interiors was instrumental. Their project leadership, material selections and furnishings gave the outdoor rooms their final layer of warmth, polish and personality. Equally important was the meticulous craftsmanship of Hotshot Hardscape & Pools, whose attention to detail brought an ambitious and technically demanding design fully to life.
